SO, LET’S TALK JOURNALLING!
This week’s episode came straight from the Mums in Biz Tribe (have you checked out the group yet? Wow - such an incredible group of ladies)
Hands up if you are a journaller from way back??? If you are anything like me, maybe you love the idea of it but don't know why you would actually dedicate time to it - what the heck are you going to get out of it anyway?
Or are you in the no-way, no-how bucket of peeps?
Well, we are exploring what journalling is and why you do it - but more importantly, how it can open up a huge opportunity for you in your biz…
Why are we talking about journalling and what the heck is it?
In practice, journaling can be whatever you want it to be. But the reason that it can be so transformational is that it’s a gateway to understanding more about yourself… to recording your life, experiencing all manner of emotions and uncovering parts of yourself you never thought existed.
It is also a profound way to uncover resistance, and blocks that are holding you back…and when you get good at it…you can use it to learn how to actually be honest with yourself.
At it's best, journaling can allow you to really get to know yourself…to dream and create a vision for where you want to be…to understand why you aren't already there, and to get super honest with yourself about your beliefs and what is important to you.
Affirmations work for a reason…because they enable us to change our innate thought patterns and beliefs. When you do this through journaling, you are creating a powerful link between action and your thoughts, it helps to embed your affirmations in the way you think about yourself and your business so much faster.
Another way to consider whether allowing journalling a place in your daily life and routine is to think about the health benefits. Before you write me off as a crazy lady (and even though I’ve got plenty of quirky, crazy to give!!!) these are SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN benefits.
Research shows that when used as part of your stress management techniques:
Journaling decreases the symptoms of asthma, arthritis, and other health conditions.
It improves cognitive functioning.
It strengthens the immune system, preventing a host of illnesses.
It counteracts many of the negative effects of stress.
Journalling is an incredibly powerful way to help you combat situations of stress in your life and your business. It is therapeutic and it is a creative outlet that we often don't allow ourselves (other than helping our children colour in or make creations!)
See, we humans…and yep, we mama's…are exceptional at hiding how we are really feeling from the world and from ourselves:
When was the last time that you ignored a little voice that told you, you didn't really want to be doing something but you did it anyway?
When was the last time that you put aside something that was REALLY important to you (big or small) to solve a problem or fill a need for someone else?
When was the last time you really allowed yourself to dream about what you would love life to be like?
When was the last time you allowed yourself the space to work through a stress or negative emotion rather than riding it out until it wasn't bothering you so much anymore?
…I could go on...
So how can you start to incorporate journalling into your life and routine?
There are literally dozens of ways that you can get started with journaling but here is a list of some of the things that you could try...what works for one person might not resonate for someone else so have a play around and see what you like.
Visual journaling: are you super visual? Do you love drawing and using imagery to express your feelings? Then maybe visual journaling is for you.
Pen-to-paper reflection: you don’t have to go all in for a super complex journaling routine - simple time spent in reflection where you record your thoughts and feelings about a situation, or in planning out an idea.
Bullet journalling: this is more than journaling really, it can be a customizable organization system. It can be your to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, and diary, and people who are diligent bullet journalers say that most likely, it will be all of the above. It can teach you to do more with less.
Gratitude journaling: Gratitude is a practice that I think we all need more of in our lives! A great way to start getting used to really delving into what you are grateful for is journalling about it.
Vision journalling: Do you know what your vision for your business looks like? What about your ideal life? Have you ever spent time really describing what it would mean to you to bring that vision to life...and what it would take? Vision journaling could be what you are looking for to help you work things out.
Just to recap, no matter how you bring it into your life, journaling can be incredibly powerful and below are just a few of the things that it can help you with.
Vision making and dreaming
Planning and goal setting
Discipline and habits
Battling resistance and limiting beliefs
Affirmations and mindset
So there you have it, really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the power and possibility of journaling for you and your business. It is easy to start small and find the way of journaling that works for you - don't allow it to be one more thing that you feel guilty for not doing "right" there really is a thousand different ways that you can incorporate journalling into your daily/weekly/monthly habits.
